Viborg Overview

Viborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. The city has 35,108 inhabitants (2009) [1]. The city's name, which throughout history has been written as Wibjerg, Wibiærgh, Wybærgh, Wiburgh and latin Wibergis, alluding to a consecrated place of worship, as we at olddansk means shrine and the city's location high in the terrain. Viborg therefore means "the sacred place on the hill".

The population of the entire Viborg municipality is 92,823 inhabitants (2009) [2]. The municipality is in area of Denmark's second largest after the Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality. Since 1 January 2007, the city has been the seat of the central management of the railroad.
