Château de VersaillesI didn't think I could look at another portrait of King Louis XIV or view another Royal Bedroom.  I was seriously thinking of skipping this tour even if I was really hyped about it coming to France, and well, after watching Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.  It's Sunday and it's raining again, or more like a persistent drizzle.  Is Paris becoming London?  The weather has nothing to do with it, but I decided that I will go see Versailles, although sans...

2 hours in Versailles

Yes, that's right, we were challenged with seeing as much of Versailles as possible in a fraction of a day.  We basically only had enough time to walk around the grounds of the palace and go for a little boat ride on the lake behind the palace.  I really wish we'd had time to actually tour the inside, so hopefully I'll make it back one day to erase that regret.  It was a warm and sunny day out, the gardens were vibrant and meticulous, and it was an all-around good day for a wal...

When I hear the name of place, Versailles, I always remember a famous Japanese anime "The Rose of Versailles" by Riyoko Ikeda. That anime left a strong impression on me, so I  fully realized  that I' d come to Versailles!

After unraveling a few more clues and nearly being robbed at gunpoint, our dynamic duo decides to visit the house of Lord Teabing, an amicable and wealthy englishman who is an expert on the Holy Grail. While trying to decipher the mystery of the Priory Keystone, they are ambushed by none other than an albino monk working for Opus Dei, a powerful yet secretive organization that is part of the Catholic church. Fortunately, the old yet still apparently nimble Teabing disables the attacker, and o...

Paris - part trois

Sat 10/21/06 6:07 AM Yay, dream come true, I was zipping through the Paris streets on a motorbike, as a passenger of course. Dali's BF took me sight seeing at night to see the famous city of lights. Saw the Lourve, Bastille, Le Seine River, Notre Dame Church, Le Concorde.  It was like a movie riding around Paris on a moped!  I felt like an 'American in Paris,' correction, it should be a 'Brooklynite in Paris.'  Ben is such a cool guy as my tour guide that night.&nbs...

Day 5: An American tour guide? No, hes French, but his English is better than yours!

Considering we got back to the hotel well past midnight from our Eiffel Tower excursion, we rather tired when our wake-up call came the next morning. We don't know what time, except that it was...early...very early...but once we got some food, we managed to sleep on our morning bus tour. But our tour guide told us some really interesting things about the city. It was my favorite bus tour of the entire trip. The most amusing fact I learned was that people used to kill themselves off of the Eif...

Like royalty in Versailles ;)

of course, if you are in Paris you should visit Versailles. It is just some minutes far away from Paris. You have to take a train and you'll be there. There might be a long line at the entrance, so try to arrive early and be patient. Just going inside might make you feel as royalty ;) I woke up early and moved to the other hostel. I took the subway and arrived to the other hostel, after getting lost - hahaha. How different! Wow! All the people there were friendly and wanted to help you. By ...

On our way home from Chartres we made a last stop in Versailles. We didn't visit the city, only the palace of the roi du soleil, Louis Quatorze. I'm sure it must be an amazing place, but after spending so much time in the sober cathedral it felt a little to 'bling bling' to us.   Versailles was actually build by Louis Treize, who loved to hunt in the area and wanted a place to stay overnight. Yet it was Louis Quatorze who expanded the building and made it the palace that it s...

The decadence of Versailles
posted by:
Jun 24, 2007 - Jun 30, 2007
Monday we caught the train out to Château de Versailles. Versailles was spectacular. Beyond spectacular it was actually disgustingly decadent (it is estimated that the upkeep of Versailles before the Revolution consumed 25% of France’s annual income). Most of it was built by the Sun King Louis XIV (which now strikes me as a very odd phrase to use for someone who never actually did anything productive in their life, but was rather born into a position where they could force others to build ...

This day, we went to beautiful Versailles!!  There was rain in the forecast for the next few days so we decided this was our only chance to see Versailles in good weather!!  We had been so lucky...3 weeks into our trip and we had perfect, warm, sunny weather EVERY DAY.  Well, in Cannes it was a little cloudy, but that was it.  I watched the movie Marie Antoinette (starring Kirsten Dunst) and I knew immediately that I needed to visit Versailles!  It looked beautiful an...

One of the nice thing when you are travelling is that you feel the history behind a monument, you can say this castle has been made in..., you can imagine how much people and how much time they needed to build the pyramid. All those questions, the history, the magnificence make you appreciate at his real value. Versailles is a good example. Huge and beautiful

In the fall semester of 2005 I had the chance to live in Valbonne, France while I was studying. It was this that gave me my jumpstart in travelling. The chance to have a place I could come back to while I was in Europe made much easier for me to travel the continent pretty much every weeked. Not only did I visit some cities outside France, but I also got the chance to visit some nice French cities and towns along the way. Evidently Paris was at the top ofthe list.

This morning we drove out to Versailles the palace of Louis XIV.  It was just as I remembered it- remarkable.  The grounds were under renovation so the gardens weren't very spectacular.  The Hall of Mirrors was also being revamped.  We had a guided tour of several of the palaces rooms.  Much of it I had forgotten.  We arrived at the palace early so our gang strolled the gardens as the white snow fell upon us.  After we took all of the cold would could handle...
