Vernazza Overview

Resting square on the Mediterranean Sea, Vernazza is perhaps the most talked about village of the Cinque Terre. Among its charming attributes are the best natural harbor and looming castle perched atop the cluster of multi-story residences clinging to the rocky shoreline.

The village is small, but still dominated by families who have inhabited this stretch of the coast for generations (in modern times many ex-pats take up residence during the summer). Access is primarily by train or boat - you can actually drive into Vernazza, but there are no roads through the village and parking is expensive (and outside of town).

Mud slides during the fall of 2011 really clobbered Vernazza and they were still digging out in May of 2012. Regardless, there is an easy vibe here reinforcing 'la vita pigra di Vernazza' --- the lazy life of Vernazza.
