Venice - Cruising the City of Canals

Venice - Queen of the Adriatic   Charles Aznavour wrote and recorded this song in 1964 that describes how sad one of the world’s most romantic cities can be when you’ve lost your love. Aznavour, often described as the "Frank Sinatra of France", is considered by many to be the king of torch songs. I’ve posted his original lyrics as well as the English translation:       Que C'est Triste Venise   Que c'est triste Venis...

I was again blessed with a perfectly satisfying weekend. This time in the delightful land of curvy canals, ambagious alleyways, gaudy gondolas, delectable dining, irrestible icecream, and, of course, that warm Italian spirit that permeates everything. Veni vidi vici!

Venice, Italy -› -› ...
I have been living in Venice for about three years now, and working with foreigners in real estate I have come to know the city well from both the Venetian and the tourist's perspective.     Venice is unlike any other city in the world.  It is HUGELY dependent upon tourism.   There is no other industry.  Venetians can not afford to live here as most people prefer to rent their houses to tourists or sell their palazzi to hotel chains.  Nevertheless Ve...

Arrive in Venice
posted by:
Dec 25, 2006 - Jan 13, 2007
It was, more or less, the last day of our trip.  It felt so funny to have it be ending, and stranger still was the sense that we'd been gone a really long time already. The following morning our plane would be taking off from the Venice Airport; so our goal for the day was to get back to Venice, and we had a train scheduled for 4:00 to get us there by about 7:10pm. The morning was spent with Michelle packing, and I wandered out to hit an internet cafe for a few minutes.  We headed...

expensive internet, grrrr

Ni hau! I'm in some chinese internet cafe somewhere far from the main sights of Venice, no big deal even if everyone speaks chinese and so does the computer, I can deal with it! For 2.50eur an hour, sounds like the best deal for me because the internet at the campsite I'm staying at costs 5euros and just when I thought that was the worst I found one in the island of Venice for 8euros! What the hey! I'll work my best to save money even if I have to take 3 buses back to the campsite from here (...

Water-taxi, anyone? (3)

(cont'd...) It must be the smallest elevator I've seen, only three of us were able to fit in going up to his apartment. There we exchanged pleasantries with his family and I was told that it's his birthday that day. After lunch, we continued our conversation at the balcony located on the upper floor. The location afforded us again of the wonders of its city - bird's eye view! From there, you wouldn't see any crowd, but only a blanket of red...

walking the labyrinth

A labyrinth of enchantments.  Grandiose and majestic architechture, the gothic alongside the baroque.  The splendour of the renaissance mingled with the magnificence of the Byzantine.  Greek churches, Jewish Ghettos, it is truly the most unique city. The adventure began at the Piazzale Roma, which is where we had to park our vehicle.  On the western side of the city, it is the starting off point for all travelers arriving via motorvehicle; with Park houses and parking lot...

Venice - September 2007 : Venice Travel Photos

One day trip to Venice that I got as a present for my birthday. I didn't want to go alone, so i took two friends with me. On the same day "regata Storica" was in town. This event happens every year on the first Sunday of September. While most tourist rushed to Canal Grande to watch regatta, we used this opportunity to wander around a little less crowded labyrinth of allies and canals.

So, Venice is getting better- my last entry was a little negative, I know, but I was having a bit of a day.... We've seen so many beautiful things, and aside from the hotel staff and train station staff, people here are very nice.  The setting makes it all worth it.  The students have been threatened with getting kicked out of the hotel many times and have been called stupid Americans, also by the hotel staff, but I think they are having a great time nonetheless.  This is the ...

Rick Steves Says You Cant Get Lost.
posted by:
May 23, 2007
So it's true Venice is an island, but getting lost is always possible and part of the excitement. Rick Steves (he's great) travel book said to wander around Venice because you can't get lost, he never said it may take a few hours to find your way back to where you need to go. When my friends and I arrived in Venice at 11:00 at night or maybe even later, we tried to find our hostel which was hidden behind a large door in a large piazza with a small, maybe even tiny lit sign saying it was so. T...

The Pearl of the Adriatic

Venice began with an evening meal at a wonderful restaurant in Venice.  We took our bus from the hotel to where we could we water-taxied out onto the island.  Naturally the dinner was delicious and of course was fish.  What else would you eat in Venice. Good wine, good music, and good food. After dinner, we strolled to St. Mark's Square.  The evening stroll made so much sense.  No pigeons, less people, and all of the wonderful architecture of the Byzantine Basi...

Early November was a great time to visit Venice.  It was very sunny for my visit and the rains had not started yet.  Although the air was pretty cool, it made it very comfortable to walk around the city.  Plus all the crowds were all gone, which made walking around the city and getting good views and photos a breeze. I decided to do the ultimate tourist excursion and take a gondola ride through the city.  Gondolas are used now by the tourists...
