A fun place to see and enjoy a bike ride, walk, swim, lunch, shop or just people watch. Saturdays and Sundays are the most fun. There are many vendors with unique clothing, art and souvenirs. Get a temp tattoo or your hair braided with one of the locals. Friendly, happy people all around.

The Venice Boardwalk is a pretty popular tourist destination, but in over 20 years of living in LA I had never visited. I went last weekend and was glad to find that I haven't been missing much. The numerous shops that line the endless beach boardwalk are like the background of an old Nintendo game: they repeat every thirty seconds. The lineup goes like this: Henna stand, write your name in fancy letters stand, generic photo/drawing stand. Repeat. Repeat.

Pretty much everyone here is a tourist, so it's a good place to go to if you want to see other tourists, I guess. But even for that, it's not really worth the hassle of trying to find parking. Any street within a one mile radius of Venice Blvd. near the ocean will be packed with cars, and the lots that weren't full were charging up to $25 to park there.

For better times, head north about a mile to Main St. in Santa Monica. The shops and restaurants along this stretch are more unique, you're more likely to run into locals, and it's generally just a lot more fun. Another alternative is the Abbot-Kinney area, although that is more for nightlife/bars.

We are going to LA in late June to go to Disneyland with 11 of our kids and grandkids, 13 in all. One of the grandkids have never seen the ocean and we were just going to try and find a beach but if there is one you would recommend, let me know.

Visiting California, I was told to go to Venice Beach. So I went. Probably shouldn't have gone since it was December, which meant it was cold and windy, but I went. Honestly, I didn't see what the big deal was. It wasn't impressive. The only shops along the boardwalk are T-shirt shacks and tattoo parlors. And everywhere you try to walk, someone is trying to sell you something, like a painting or a CD they made at home. It's a little annoying. The people watching was fun, but that was about it. I doubt I'd go back. It was pretty lame to me.
