Venice is an Italian city made up of 118 islands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Venice has been around since the fifth century and has been home to a civilization that ruled much of the Eastern Mediterranean. It controlled shipping and trade between empires. The city is built up on a lagoon. Everything is on pilings and floods often due to the tidal action in the lagoon. Ongoing projects to counter this are in the works and they are considered to be engineering marvels. The city has many things to see. The Grand canal, the bridge of Sighs, The Palace of the Doge and St.Marks Square are the highlights. Gondolas plow the many canals that separate the neighborhoods. Architecture is also amazing and characteristic to this city alone. The Island of Murano is home to an exceptional community of glassmakers and Murano glass is coveted around the world.
