One of Bulgaria's primary tourist destinations, Veliko Tarnovo boasts many historical monuments and landmarks, such as the ruins of the castle Tsarevets, which housed the royal and patriarchal palace, and Trapezitsa, the second fortress of the inner city.
Don't miss "The Sound and Light" show which combines music, colorful lights, lasers and the sound of the church bells as the stage remains the royal palace and the whole hill where it is located. It presents the story of the glory and tragedy of the Second Bulgarian Empire is interpreted and told with no words but only the power of colors and music.

My expectations of Bulgaria really were that it, probably, wouldn't be that different from Romania, given it proximity. Boy, was I wrong. I was also wowed by the ancient monastaries, the mountain hamlets, castles, coastal villages, mosques, and so much more.
