Velikiy Novgorod Vacation Guide

Velikiy Novgorod translates as "great new town" though it starts its history in 9th century. Veliliy Novgorod is located south of St.Petersburg. It's one of Russia's gems, a beautiful ancient city full of historic treasures. The heart of the city is the ancient Kremlin overlooking the Volkhov river. By the entrance to the Kremlin there is a helpful tourist center where you'll find local maps in various languages and even a guide. The Kremlin features the Museum of Russian icons which contains unique examples. On the territory of the Kremlin you can find not only museums and churches but also nice restraunts. Take a stroll along the Volkhov river embankment (local promenade) to absorb the peaceful and friendly atmosphere of the city.

Once the Kremlin is exlored the next place not to miss when in V.Novgorod is Yurev Monastery and Museum of Wooden Architecture. The museum is an open air and displays peasant houses and wooden churches. You can get there by bus or by taxi.

If you travel to Velikiy Novgorod from Saint Petersburg it takes about 4 hours by bus.
