Vat Phou River Cruise
For our twelfth anniversary, we decided to splurge and head to Southern Laos for a three day cruise up the Mekong on the luxurious Vat Phou riverboat. The boat is really nice and comfortable with twelve births downstairs including attached hot shower bath and AC (runs only at night) and two AC suites upstairs. There is a great forward salon with tables, couches, etc. for relaxing as well as an aft salon with an open air dining room and bar. The service is first rate and the food (all inclusive) is very good. They even have some reasonably priced French wine (not all that easy to find in Laos).
We chose the up-river cruise which consisted of a visit to Khon Phapheng waterfall and a visit (actually our longtail boat broke and we never saw this – see the blog) to the abandoned French railroad on Don Ket before several hours of cruising to arrive at the Vat Phou boat. The second day sights included lots of sights along the river including stopping at a small village school and visiting the remote Oup Moung forest temple. On the last day, we got to visit the very impressive Vat Phou ruins, a World Heritage Site.
The trip is not inexpensive, but if you book it in Asia, it is much cheaper than doing it from home. The trip is actually mentioned in the “1000 Things to do before you die” book. All in all, it was a great time and highly recommended.
