Vasteras Vacation Guide
Vasteras is a city in central Sweden about an hour west of Stockholm on Lake Malaren. It's one of the oldest cities in Sweden dating back to the Viking Age.
It is nicknamed "gurkstaden" (cucumber city) after the growing of cucumbers became popular in the 18th century.
Modern Vasteras is better known as an industrial city and is home to engineering giant ABB as well as other companies. In the last 10 years the city has flourished largely due to it's close proximity to Stockholm. New, stylish( and expensive) apartment blocks have sprung up all around the main railway station. This in turn has brought on some very high class restaurants such as Pramen, located in the harbour.
A couple of annual events worth mentioning are; Power Meet. A classic car show where people show off their pride and joy around town alongside some proper bangers and other interesting vehicles . Another is Arosfestivalen. A huge free festival which includes everything from wrestling to food and music.

As a treat for me and my Mum, her partner, Bjorn had booked us on a mini cruise to Helsinki. The boat leaves Stockholm port at 5 pm every day so we had plenty of time to get there. The bus for Stockholm wasn't leaving until 2 pm so I had a couple of hours to kill while Mum squared a few things away…

Summer holidays 2007. 1 week Scotland followed by a long way back home from Bergen, Norway via Stockholm and Kopenhagen.
All made possible by DFDS Seaways, that sails between IJmuiden and Newcastle and between Newcastle and Bergen.
