Varkala is a small beach town in the state of Kerala in South India. It lies about an hour north of the state's capital city - Trivandrum (also known as Thiruvananthapuram)
Although the beaches of Trivandrum like Kovalam and Veli are more popular, Varkala boasts of a view that none of the other better known beaches can match. With steep cliffs that overlook a vast ocean, Varkala is an ideal place for meditation, introspection.. or just some peace and contentment!
The beach to visit is the Papanasham (Which literally means - destroy evil!)beach. The localites and other believers claim that the waters of this beach are holy and they bathing in this beach washes away sins. Something like what is believed of bathing in the Ganges.
There arent many big hotels in the vicinity, but there are some yoga and meditation centers.
The best way to get here would be from Trivandrum - either by Car or bus. There also are frequent trains running between the two places.
