Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Trucks New York Reviews
New York City Ice Cream Trucks Jun 17, 2012
I have heard about Van Leeuwen ice trucks for the last few years from relatives in New York City.
Beginning in 2008, the Van Leeuwen family started operating ice cream trucks around Manhattan (there are now six trucks) serving delicious, gourmet ice creams. Trucks are renovated post office trucks and are each named for an animal, as a percentage of Van Leeuwen's profits helps endangered gorillas in the Congo.
The flavors are rich, scrumptious and unusual, including pistachio, vanilla, mint chip, espresso, chocolate, strawberry, cinnamon, ginger, palm sugar and even Earl Grey tea. Each truck is also stocked with coffee (including an espresso machine!) as well as fresh pastries and cookies. My personal favorite is the strawberry ice cream, as you can really taste the fresh berries.
The trucks are scattered around Manhattan (some in major tourist areas) including SoHo (Greene and Prince Streets), Highline Park (weekends only) and near the former Tavern on the Green in Central Park (daily). The Central Park location is also near Sheep Meadow so visitors can have a scoop of ice cream while picnicking in the park. There are also a few tables just outside the truck.
With six trucks in operation, be sure to check the website, www.vanleeuwenicecream.com, to see when and where the trucks will be located.
While the price per scoop is expensive, this is really good ice cream and definitely filling enough for a meal (which will help costs for visitors to Manhattan). A small scoop runs $5.99 and a large scoop is $6.75.
Van Leeuwen also operates ice cream shops in the East Village and in Brooklyn with the same menu, but the trucks are what you want to find.
New York City is an expensive city and it's hard to know where to eat. If you are in tourist areas like Central Park or Highline Park, look for the Van Leeuwen truck. The ice cream is first rate and definitely worth trying.
