Let's not hold my sort-of-mugging against Valparaiso, overall it was a charming town and different from anywhere I had visited previously on my trip. But, having said that, I would advise people not to make the mistake of becoming complacent and thinking that because they have survived poorer more dangerous countries they will be lucky enough to have a totally trouble free trip!  Because just around the corner there will always be somebody motivated by greed rather than need, ...

We visited the coastal town of Valparaiso for the day. It was a short drive from Santiago and definitely worth the visit. We nearly had the beach to ourselves- and it was the Summer. Here- we learned just how funny Chilean men are. My friends and I decided to wear our Brazilian bikinis to the beach- which leaves little to the imagination, might I add...but , the smaller the bikini, the better! We literally had the beach to ourselves... so much room to lay out...so much room that others didn't...

So here we are in Valparaíso! And what a pleasant surprise!  We were thinking that it would be just another tourist trap, and that we'd hate it, but no, not at all!! Valparaíso, the country's principal port and probably one of its main tourist destinations, is the place to be in Chile! It's an interesting seaport, charming, very dynamic and quite an artsy kind of place too.  It's as if many cities were thrown into one here . . . An fantastic tour of of the country of Chile. From Santiago, it's capitol and the wineries including Concha y Toro to the coast and the beautiful cities of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. A long flight to the south to explore the Patagonias, Torres del Paines National Park and Punta Arenas de capitol of the southern region.

Found that there was a train line that had just been operating for about 2-3 weeks which headed north from Valparaiso so decided to take a ride to see what there was to see.  It was clean, cheap and ultra modern.   The countryside took us through mountains and many villages.  Once we reached the end of the line we headed back to Vina del Mar and disembarked to walk along the seafront.  Took a pony and trap ride which cost us about $AUS12 which showed us a bit of the c...

This blog is of my trip back to Chile after having left the country a decade ago to move to the United States. During this trip we went to Santiago, Vina del Mar and La Serena (and several other cities surrounding this area).

A five and half week trip that starts with a week in Santiago Chile, heads briefly to La Paz and across Lake Titicaca to Puno and Cuzco, Peru where I will spend over two weeks. My last week will be around the beginning of August and will cover Lima and some of the southern coastal towns of Peru.

From Iguazu to Buenos Aires, through Patagonia to Ushuaia and tons of places in between!

Hola amigos. as those of you who know me are already aware, brought down by the ennui of life in the UK and the NHS, we quit our miserable jobs and flew away for three months to see the wonders of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. here's a few bits of our adventures. (i started this about a month into the trip but I'll try and write about the first few weeks retrospectively.)
