Valetta Overview

Valletta is the new capital of Malta (before it was Mdina). Located roughly 2/3 of the way along the northern coast of the Island, approximately 10km from Luqa airport. It is the largest harbour city on Malta. The harbour effectively splits the town almost in half. Valletta is the main stop from the bus terminals, as all buses either head to or from Valletta, which means cross Island journeys will result in a brief stop at Valletta.

Valletta is one of the main areas for larger shops and facilities, being that Malta is so small and Valletta is so accessible. It is especially bustling during the Christmas season when it is decorated with all kinds of decorations and lights. Shops stay open until late and during the weekends, carolers of all ages will be singing on the sidewalks along with other street stalls and performers.

The Maltese Carnival is a real treat. The main carnival parade which is made up of a large number of floats and hundreds of performers from all over Malta takes place in Valletta. The parade goes through the main roads of Valletta. The Carnival celebrations usually take around 3 days and all main activities are centered in Valletta.

Valletta also offers the most amazing views from its 2 main gardens; The Upper Barrakka Gardens (In Maltese it is called: Il-Barrakka ta' Fuq) which offers an amazing panoramic view of the Grand Harbour, and the Lower Barrakka Gardens (In Maltese it is called: Il-Barrakka t'Isfel) which overlooks the Grand Harbour and the breakwater also offers views of Fort Ricasoli, Bighi Palace, Fort St Angelo and the creeks of Vittoriosa and Kalkara.
