Valdosta Overview

Valdosta is a city of just under 50,000 population and the county seat of Lowndes County.

It is called the Azalea City as the plant grows in profusion there; the city hosts an annual Azalea Festival in March.

Valdosta is called the "Naval Stores Capital of the World" because it supplies 80% of the world demand for naval stores.

Valdosta has a number of picturesque historic districts including the well maintained Fairview Historic District which includes the Roberts House, the oldest home in Lowndes County.

Another famous building, The Crescent, has all the appearance of an antebellum mansion on oak-shaded grounds, although it was actually built in the early 20th century.

Remerton is a popular mini-town in the middle of Valdosta. It was first started because Valdosta blue laws did not allow the purchase of alcohol on Sundays. Because it was considered a different town, Remerton was able to find a loop-hole in the blue laws. Valdosta residents now had somewhere to go to have a few beers while watching football, golf or NASCAR on Sundays.

15% of Valdosta's population is military members because it is home of Moody Air Force Base, so don't be surprised to see HH-60 helicopters, A-10 fighter aircraft or HC-130P fixed wing combat search and rescue aircraft flying overhead.

Valdosta is very popular to travelers from Florida due to the fact that it is a prime shopping center, with tons of shopping outlets and malls.
