Uvalde is a city in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 14,929 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Uvalde County.
Uvalde was the home of John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner, former Speaker of the House and Vice President of the United States. Actor Matthew McConaughey, actress Dale Evans, and former Governor of Texas Dolph Briscoe, were born in Uvalde. Uvalde is also home to the Grammy Award winning Tejano/Norteño group Los Palominos.
According to the Uvalde Police Department, despite the town's small size, it is plagued with high violence, crime, and juvenile delinquency. The crime rate is larger than that of Eagle Pass, a much larger city.
