A Walk in the Art Aug 28, 2015
A marvelous walking tour that is well organized and makes for a grand introduction to downtown Asheville. If you are new to the town, I recommend this as a great way to introduce yourself to local history and get the lay of the land. Do this first!

There are thirty stops along the 1.7 mile path and you should budget two hours to complete the circuit. Your way is marked with plentiful pink granite slabs embedded along the way, but you definitely want to pick up the Urban Trail pamphlet, which includes a map. Four different time periods are spanned along the stroll and the granite markers change with each era. You will not know what to look for to guide you along without the reference info.

An iron marker appears at each station, providing details about the significance of your stop. Your pamphlet also has a blurb, and something that appealed to me was how they complemented one another (no duplication of facts!). Better yet, almost every station included a custom art installation. These pieces were a joy above and beyond everything else. A splendid feast of Asheville’s culture and history that simultaneously teaches you how to get around for the rest of your visit.

I absorbed a great many interesting facts and there is a true wealth of fascinating tidbits, but I’d rather you be surprised when you do the walk.
