Countrylink trains have raised their prices astronomically. It's now about $40 one-way to get from Melbourne to Rutherglen. As I said in an earlier review, you still have to book some time in advance (i.e. not 5 mins before the train leaves, like you can with vline).

Vline has actually lowered their prices. It costs about $20 to get from Melbourne to Rutherglen (and vice versa) on a Saturday afternoon. The downside is that on the weekend, they're still making upgrades on the Melbourne-Albury line, so you have to train it from Rutherglen to Seymour, and then take a transfer to a coach on Seymour (the same goes if you're travelling in the opposite direction). The transfer isn't hard, they have enough buses to seat everyone who was on the train, and you basically walk off the train and onto a bus. The travelling time is about the same as if you were to take a train the whole way normally.
