I was visiting something as special in Brussels as a Norwegian restaurant. Back in Brussels I wanted to keep my Nordic cool and enjoy the fresh fish from Norway; well that is a bit exaggerated; I just happen to love eating fish and so did my travel partner Barbara.

Up North aim to offer a personal rendition of Scandinavian cuisine and they are very selective in their use of products and typical methods of cooking; baseline is that the cooking is subjected to an innovative Nordic gastronomic approach. The restaurant see it as a challenge to play a part in bringing forth a regeneration of Nordic culinary craft to Brussels with its distinctive tastiness and special regional character.

Seven months earlier while I was still living in Brussels I got an email about the opening of this place and I had been close to go there many time, but now it was time to do it. My expectations were quite large because Norwegian fish is usually of very good quality.

The restaurant was rather small; it probably fitted 25 - 30 persons in all. The interior was dark and cozy; dark wood tables with candle light on and dark wood chairs as well. It was more a cozy place than a cold Nordic design. The kitchen was visible from all seats and there was a small low bar in front of it.

As an appetizer they served a small cone with salmon paste; which turned out to a great start of great evening. As a starter I chose a salmon dish; a Gravlax with mustard sauce and salad of warm dill potatoes for 16€ and Barbara took an Aquavit-marinated salmon with cucumber and dill salad for 15€, we shared and both dishes were marvellous.

We waited a moment to have the main courses but after that I chose Hot-smoked haddock with root stew for 22€ while Barbara took a Medallions of monkfish, fennel purée, glazed beetroot, apples and langoustine sauce for 23€. Both dishes were fabulous. We had a nice Sancerre.

Even though we were quite full we chose to share a Trio of Nordic cheeses at 11€, and we had a couple of Norwegian Linie aquavits.
