University of Montana Missoula Reviews
Beautiful campus with easily accessible recreation Jul 24, 2014
I have just returned from a week on UM's campus. While there we stayed in the dorms, ate at the cafeteria, and hiked the M, along with a long list of other activities. The dorms were all right, nothing to shout about, but the food was amazing. The time the staff took to prepare and ensure the quality of the food was impressive, as was the fact that most everything was labeled not just naming the item, but what was in it, where is came from, was it organic, etc. That was awesome! Most of the greens were grown organically on campus or were from local farms. Every morning we hiked to the M above the campus, or higher, which was not as strenuous as initially thought. It was rather steep, but the zig zag trail system and benches made it a reasonable hike for all members of our group. I certainly recommend doing it earlier in the day, during the summer, because the one time we did it in the afternoon was pretty tough because of the heat. There is also a great river trail path one can follow several miles up the Clark River and down into town. We did float a pretty good section of river one afternoon which was very refreshing. The average price of a tube to rent was $15 so a little expensive, and you want to make sure you have a ride lined up to get the tube back. There was a nice little section right by the campus that forks off from the main river you can swim and float without a tube in, but the current is pretty strong and there are abandoned lures on the banks so be prepared to get swept away with shoes. The campus and surrounding area was very well maintained and beautiful. There are so many historical markers around the campus, it was really educational. We were able to walk to ice cream at the infamous Big Dipper almost every night! Be prepared to wait in line and at the window as their process isn't totally streamlined, but it is well worth the wait for the exotic flavors and awesome, classic scoops they dish out.
It was a great week staying on the campus!
