Wonderland for nature-lovers and photographers Sep 16, 2009
This place is worth the drive from Minneapolis out to Chaska. Google Maps might get you a bit lost (it had us on a parallel road to the one we needed), but even being lost was beautiful, with farms on either side of the road filled with contented-looking sheep, cows, llamas, and ponies.

See my blog for more description of the actual place.

The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum which is a part of the Department of Horticultural Science in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University. It is a fabulous gem of a natural resource located just a few miles from my house. Its one of my favorite places to go enjoy the fall colors, but is open year round for the entire public to enjoy. There are more 1,000 acres of 1,000 acres of wonderful gardens, model landscapes, and natural areas-from woodlands and wetlands to prairie-with extensive collections of northern-hardy plants. With over 5,000 plant species throughout the 1,137 acres of public gardens, the Arboretum is a great place to get ideas and inspiration for ones own landscaping. 12.5 miles of garden paths and hiking trails are also yours to explore all around the Arboretum grounds. The most common activity is taking a nature walk on one of the many trails, but in the fall the Three-Mile Drive is also extremely popular way to see the fall leaves in their autumnal hue. The nature walks are the most popular activities at the Arboretum, but it certainly is not the only activity. There are several options for tours, guided, self-guided and group tours are available by foot, car, bus or tram. You can even take a virtual tour before you visit. You can also take the family for free hands-on activities such as maple syrup tasting, gardening, pumpkin carving and learning about how plants affect our daily lives throughout the year.

The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is also well-know for its research in fruit breeding, wood landscaping and spring peeper meadow wetlands. Apple research here has helped lead to such apple varieties as the ever-popular Honeycrisp and the new Sweetango.
