Striking gardens, chapel, squares, museums, sculptures Aug 14, 2010
Oxford and Cambridge in my own country are such splendid university cities that I am often disappointed on visiting European ones, not so much for quality but for the amount to be seen. No such reservation needs to be made about Coimbra.

The University dates back to the 13th century from what was called The Portuguese General Study. This changed several times beteen Coimbra and Lisbon but eventually became the University of Coimbra By the 16th century there were a number of faculties, all established in the Páteo das Escolas. Today, as well as the ancient library, of which I have done a separate review, there are faculty buildings, a large statue and the University Tower and, above all, St Michael's Chapel. I was lucky enough to arrive here while an organ recital was in progress. No speaking is permitted in the chapel - even official guides have to do their spiel outside.

Now, however, the University has extended way beyond the Páteo das Escolas. The science faculties and their interesting museums lie along a nearby road and there are botanical gardens. Be careful if you go down the very steep route from here to the river. I found myself running without wanting to and would have been flat on my face if I had not managed to run into a parked car. Yes, it hurt!
