University Inn Montgomery Reviews
Student Accomodations at University Inn Jul 28, 2012
For $39 bucks a night you can't beat these rates--even for long term stays. University Inn lodging complex on Maxwell-Gunter AFB is one of the largest military lodging operations in the world, with 1,574 rooms on Maxwell AFB and 706 rooms on Gunter Annex. We stayed here while golfing at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Caiptol Hill Professional Course in Prattville outside Montgomery. Even with over 2,000 rooms, they were full up the weekend we chose to go golfing--so reserve a room early if you plan on staying here.
It is a quick drive the 6-7 blocks to dwontown Montgomery, but due to the surrounding neighborhood off-base security situation, walking is NOT recommended. Be sure to take a taxi if you plan to drink adult beverages. Very "seedy" neighborhood outside the main gate toward downtown Montgomery with many boarded up buildings.
The rooms were very clean and the bed was OK comfort-wise. There are two flat-screen TVs, a full kitchen with stove top and microwave, iron/ironing board, toaster, lockable safe and a full refrigerator/freezer combo. There were limited dishes and I did not see any utinsels or cutlery. The desk and livingroom/kitchen were fine for student use. These rooms have a HUGE walk-in closet!
The bathroom was OK--not a whole lot of room to spread out and the shower door was not too leaky. Shelf/counter top space in the bathroom was limited.
The front desk staff was friendly and provided maps of the area--even recommended a few places to eat which were excellent! Just note that the on-base Shoppette is NOT 24x7 and closes at 10PM even on Saturday nights. The front desk does sell beer and some wine, along with frozen breakfasts and OJ for the morning. The desk is open 24x7 in case you get the munchies....
I stayed for a month at University Inn for a class in 1998 and again for a couple of weeks in 2000, so I was a bit familiar with the rooms and location. Overall, if you need a plave to stay in the Montgomery area and you qualify to get on base, University Inn is a wise choice and a cheap option with a good location near downtown!
