Union Square New York Reviews
Union Square, center for students, hipsters, and liberals Sep 22, 2009
During the summer in the day time there is usually a greenmarket for fresh vegetable produce, and people selling their crafts like handpainted t-shirts, paintings, photographs, and bongs...you know for smoking tobacco ;). All throughout the day and night, there are usually students there skate boarding, perhaps playing volleyball, and sometimes diversifying their activities with a round of hackey sack.
Union Square is also known for the odd political protest, sometimes against the war in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. or meat eating.
It's near a few college campuses, such as NYU, and the Film Academy. In the summer, my friend and her schoolmates from the film academy were filming interviews with random people on the street. The square does have a sort of vibrant, current, youth culture.
In the winter, there is a Holiday Market. For a couple months, several huge red and white striped tents with strung up fairy-lights are set up to sell handcrafts like scarves, gloves, carved wooden boxes, and old maps etc. I personally liked their waffle stands this past winter, and the sale of the solar chargers. (The Union Squarers do try to be hippie-dippie aware :D).
Union Square is in walking distance of a lot of hangout places, near downtown to the clubs, hotels, Barney's (for clothes shopping), some pool places, etc.
Many NYC trains can leave you directly in the Square.
