This is a very nice view looking down into Union Square from the Cheesecake Factory at the top floor of Macy right located at the center of San Francisco downtown area.

Union Square is tiny compared to the plazas in most cities, and it is surrounded by skyscrapers on all sides, but there are lots of shops and people around the area. It is also a fairly central location. Market St. is just a few blocks south, Chinatown and north beach are to the north, and the Embarcadero/Financial district is to the east. It is very touristy - I even tried handing out flyers to tourists here advertising TravBuddy :) - but it is worth it to spend some time walking around the general area. For a nice (and free!) view of the city, go to one of hte nearby hotels and take an elevator up as high as you can go.

I really agree Eric - when we arrived in San Francisco this is where we headed to grab a coffee stave off jet lag and watch the world go by! Heather
