A Daring Theater Jun 27, 2011
Cleverly named for it's location (under Main Street in Dallas' Deep Ellum area), Undermain Theater is a small non profit theater which seats approximately 50 people or so. It is in the substructure of a red brick 6 story building, but is typically somewhat easy to locate as there are door greeters with flashlights outside on performance nights. I've been to Undermain multiple times and have enjoyed my experience every time. If you wish to see daring, in-your-face pieces which are at times blatantly honest with topics such as race and sexism as a means to enhance society's consciousness level for improvement, this is your place. I recently saw Young Jean Lee's 'The Shipment' at Undermain. The production was hilarious, well written, extremely well preformed and caused tension in the air amongst the audience (via the topic of modern day racism) that could be cut with a knife. It received a lasting standing ovation at it's finale. Undermain is known for providing experimental, enlightening pieces that leaves society to reevaluate it's moral standings. I'd highly recommend this theater to anyone in search of an evening of theatrical entertainment in the Downtown Dallas area. Afterwards, the Dallas nightlife is literally within walking distance.
