A must see attraction in Naples Aug 21, 2008
This attraction was one of the highlights of this trip. There are two companies that have guides that will show you underground Naples. Under the ground of Napels are over 400 km of tunnels and corridors! The ancient greeks started digging these tunnels over 2000 years ago. They used the ground to build the city with! After them, the Romans uses these holes and tunnels as waterdepots. You can still see some of those depots. After them, the tunnels were used to drop garbage in. Hundreds of years ago, Naples had a garbage problem like now and dropping the garbage in the tunnels was the solution. As a result, the tunnels our now 6 meter above the original ones. In World War II finally, the tunnels were used as hiding spaces. I found it really interesting to see this network of 400 km of tunnels 40 m under the ground. A guide is always going with you otherwise you can get lost, and beleive me, you will. The tunnels were very narrow and sometimes it was very difficult to move or to see. It's incredibly dark down there. The light of the candle is the only light you have. If you can't handle small and narrow spaces, it's now the place to be for you. And if you are very tall of big, it's also not a great place. But if that all isn't a problem then it's really interesting and unique!

I am going to Naples and came across your feedback. I would love to explore the undergrond tunnels but upon reading it, I might not. I am claustrophobic!! Great feedback!

the history is realy great and the tunnels are amazing, the garbage problem of Naples is not Naples fault, it goes very deep.

This sounds really neat! I didn't know about it when I was there but I saw it on a travel program after I got back. I wished I had known about it sooner.
