Quaint charm in Hilo May 05, 2001
Uncle Billy's is a great place to stay while you're in Hilo. It is not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination. Uncle Billy's has a quaint and simple charm about it. The rooms are of average size and have simple island style hotel furniture. Each room has a wall mounted air conditioning unit , mini-refrigerator, private balcony and you even get complimentary breakfast. It's a real breakfast too - not a pitcher of coffee and stale pastries. It's a breakfast buffet at the restaurant. Uncle Billy's also has kitchenette units available if you prefer to save a little cash and do your own cooking.
The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool. It's small but it's a pool. There are also coin operated laundry facilities. A small cocktail lounge is adjacent to the restaurant. The restaurant isn't anything fancy but the food is good. The decor is an unintentional retro-1960s thing. During dinner there is a music and dance show. It's entertaining. On a weekend night it gets filled up with patrons. The hotel is located right on Hilo Bay. There isn't a swimming beach at the hotel. It's nasty volcanic rock that'll hurt your bare feet. I took some photos of the waterfront at the hotel. It's only a 5-10 minute drive to the airport. The Volcano National Park is 45 minutes away. There is a big shopping mall and a Safeway grocery store 10 minutes away and downtown Hilo is 5 minutes by car. You get the idea - Uncle Billy's is convenient. And at around $75/night it's affordable (for Hawaii). Part of the The Big Island of Hawaii travel blog |
