Lovely in every way Aug 17, 2011
From making the reservations, to arranging our pick-up, ayurvedic massage, to getting a driver ... Karan Rathore and his hotel staff made everything easy for us two female travellers. Don't be afraid to ask for help - everybody at Umaid Mahal is friendly, knowledgable and super sweet.

Only negative was that we got a room on the ground floor, and I think it was close to the kitchen and there were motorbikes parked outside our window. We commented that we were not too happy with the location of the room and were soon offered a change of room as soon as one was available (see, told you they're super sweet). But we decided it wasn't worth the fuss and stayed put - we didn't have much problem with outside noise after all.

The interior of the room and the rest of the hotel - breathtaking. If you get a room on the upper floors, you'll see exactly how beautiful it is. I wish I had a saree to wear so I could walk through the hotel feeling like a Rajasthani princess!

We didn't have dinner in the hotel, but went upstairs to the rooftop for a peek. It's lovely there. Romantic spot for a drink before bedtime ... but I wasn't with anyone I could be romantic with - so we passed on that.

Oh, make sure you visit their sister hotel - Umaid Bhavan. It's a haveli, which is more of a guesthouse ... meaning not as lavish as Umaid Mahal, but still very, very charming. There's a little shop with good quality souvenirs. My friend bought a lovely silk scarf and I bought a gorgeous beaded bag.

Breakfast at Umaid Mahal is good too, so wake up early and don't miss it. The morning we were there, there were baked cheese-stuffed tomatoes. Yummy.

Because the hotel is so beautiful with Rajasthani art and plush furniture, it's photo opportunity at every bend.

Like staying at Taj :) Nov 29, 2010
This is a 3 star heritage hotel which looks like a palace right from the entrance door until you get in. Sooo beautiful! It's like living in a museum/palace..actually feels like living in Taj Majal :P

This is way much better than the previous hotel I stayed in which is Fortune Metropolitan hotel where the room is Rs4000 at a discounted price! For Umaid Majal it was only Rs3,500 booked the night before and if I booked it earlier could have been cheaper like Rs3000 bec they give discounts for earlier booking.

The doorway was fab! The check-in went smoothly and without any problems. We were brought to 3/F for a double bed room and I said I specifically requested for a twin bed. We got back to the reception area and immediately were shown to a new room this time with twin bed :)

The bed is ok and I checked out the bathroom which is complete with toiletries and may I say more than that provided in the previous hotel. This one has even a complimentary comb and bottle opener!

I asked them to turn on the aircon so I dont have to do it myself and asked about the box underneath the table. I was told it's a portable heater. Cool :)

We went out for sightseeing and went back on sundown. I turned the heater on as it was cold esp with the marble floors and it worked ok. I asked about the restaurant and we were informed about the 2 restaurants it has, the one on rooftop and the one on 1/F. We went to rooftop first but since it's outside and quite cold, we decided to go down and eat there.

There's no one downstairs and we chose a set meal. After, we ordered some desserts and tho the first 2 were not available, we managed to try 2 available ones :P The dinner cost more than Rs500 which is ok for us. The beer cost Rs160 which seem a bit pricey however hotels usually put a significant margin for F&B :P

When I went back up, I decided I will go around and take pictures of the hotel. It was really interesting. Each floor has a slightly different design so I went to each floor and took my shots. When I get back to my room, I arranged for the breakfast in the early morning. We asked if its possible to have a breakfast on the go bec we're leaving very early in the morning, they said ok and they will provide some bread & coffee.

The following morning, I called at exactly 6am to check on our breakfast and after a few minutes, it was brought to us. We were given some toast with butter and jam and also a packed sandwhich with some spread. I also had coffee pot which allowed me to have 2 cups of coffee :P All in all I liked the breakfast.

After packing and finishing breakfast with the packed sandwhich placed inside the bag, I asked for concierge to help with my luggage. They immediately sent someone up and we went down for check-out.

When we got there, there's also a couple checking out so we had to wait for them to finish first. After they're done, they prepared ours and the charges was as expected and correct.

I highly recommend this as this is good for value money. Also its an interesting experience to stay over a heritage house which feels a bit of royalty for a relatively cheap price.

The little diamond of Jaipur Jul 18, 2008
It's a diamond in Jaipur!

Rooms with a lot of marble, nice furniture, all luxurous and a nice quiet rooftop restaurant. Absolutely nothing to complain about.

No backpack pricing, but reasonable prices. I paid the low season price of 2000 for the Royal deLuxe room. A huge luxurous room with a marble bathroom. And nicely quiet compared to the hectic city outside.

If you like this kind of hotels, ask the owner because he has some recomandations in other Radjastan towns.

Palace hotel in Jaipur Apr 26, 2008
This palace hotel was a nice place to escape the loud, busy streets of Jaipur. The decor was slightly gaudy but I guess that is to be expected in a palace! Rooms were clean and spacious and the air conditioning was actually too cold! The only complaint I had was that the shower absolutely flooded the entire bathroom. It was a bit pricey at 1800 Rs ($45 USD) per night but the cost of the room included free breakfast (3 options to choose from) on the rooftop restaurant, which had very good food. Apparently there is a pool that I have only just now discovered on their website! And their websites mentions that they offer puppet shows on demand, however, I did not stay to find out! The hotel can arrange taxis, tours, and hired drivers for you also.
