Uluru Vacation Guide
One of the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, along with Kata Tjuta. Uluru is an enormous monolith that rises nearly 350 metres above the flat plains. It is one of the most spectacular icons of Australia.
The site is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, and is the centre of many important Tjukurpa legends (also known as dreamtime legends).
From 1872 to 1993 Uluru was also known as Ayers Rock, named by Ernest Giles in honour of Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. In 1993 the original aboriginal name was recognised, resulting in a dual naming policy.
The local aboriginal people are the official custodians of Uluru. They encourage travellers to visit, but request that the site is treated with respect, that the rock itself is not climbed, and that certain sites around Uluru are not photographed.

Our second day
in the Northern Territory
was also spent at Uluru. The sunrise was beautiful. We sat next to each other

as Uluru slowly changed to a vivid red colour with the change in light.
After the sunrise we …

We left quite early on this trip as we wanted to make the most of
our next accommodation. To stay at the resort of Yulara near Uluru
(Ayers Rock) isn’t cheap, the room we had cost just over $450, but when
you have a 500 kilometre journey there it’s not like you have much of a
choice but to …
