Moscow, Russia -› Perm, Russia -› …
Our last day in Ulaanbaatar. And, in a way, also our first day, as during our previous visits to the city we didn't do much sightseeing (with the exception of our half-morning trip to the monastery). And while Ulaanbaatar is an ugly place, it certainly merits a visit.
But first we had to move hot…

Woke up pretty early to catch a 8am train to Beijing. Spent most of the day doing the usual sleeping/eating/reading on the train. For some reason today dragged on. Being idle sucks.

I was fortunate enough to have to work in Mongolia for two and a half weeks. Primarily working in Ulaanbaatar, I got a chance to leave the city and check out the country side, or as the locals call it the real Mongolia. It is October/November and the tempatures are around -10 celsius to 5 celsius. …

I arrived around 11 pm to my hostel. As the taxi drive around the capital, it was dark and bumpy. There are few lights here and there for hotels and restaurants. But the city was too dark. I thought my hotel is really far away from the center. As I got out, the taxi's assistant told me …

This morning we left early from Ulaanbaatar Station on board the train for our final stop of the Trans Siberia Express: Beijing. It would take a bit longer then 24 hours before we reached China's capital city.

I organized a 2-day tour from my guesthouse (Idre's Guesthouse), and took off for Terelj National Park with my guide, Tsarana, and my driver, Tumoor. We stopped at the humongous Turtle Rock formation, and walked over a seriously deteriorated wooden bridge, missing slats, rotted out,…

The Elstei camp was in the middle of nowhere but had been set up specifically for tourists, so again not quite the full traditional experience we expected. There was running hot water, flushing toilets and a small restaurant/bar. Definitely not something worth complaining about because …

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia -› Beijing, China -› …
Two weeks in Mongolia's capital. It's my first visit in 16 years (since 1992!). A LOT has changed. The city doesn't reek of mutton anymore and there is quite an amazing traffic problem now. Same soviet streets, modern needs. Crime is a huge problem here now. …

There are not words in the english language to describe the kind of cold here in the Mongolian winter. The numbers on the thermometer simply don't make sense, it has been -21 Farenheit (-30 C) this week. The human body doesn't really 'feel' these temperatures, it's only when you get bac…

I rode back the 65-80 km from Terelj to Ulaanbaatar on Friday (no one seems to know the real distance). I had an offer for a ride to the city from my tour company as soon as they finished some meetings in the village. I said I would start off toward the city and meet them on the road. I made good t…
