Key church visit in Udine Apr 02, 2011
Serving as the main seat for the Archbishop of Udine, this cathedral is Udine’s premier cathedral. Originally built in the gothic style in the thirteenth century, the church was consecrated as Santa Maria Maggiore a century later. The church seems to have happily existed until the early part of the eighteenth century, when the powerful Manin family decided to renovate the building and have extensive improvements done to the building. The result might have resulted in architectural confusion, but I’m rather glad the Manins decided to flex their economic and political muscle. The interior is a stunning piece of art, and seeing the work of masters such as Tiepolo on full display here was an absolute pleasure. The overall effect is wonderful, and if you are in Udine, this has to be a key visit.
