04/18/07Kalu picked us up this morning (apparently Nandu is meeting us tomorrow in Ranakpur and swapping jobs with Kalu) and we drove out of Udaipur heading into the Aravali Hills that stretch across Rajasthan. Unlike other parts of Rajasthan, Udaipur and the surrounding areas are green and riddled with lakes and desert trees and cactus. Elegant sari-clad women delicately walk down the roads balancing large, heavy looking bowls, baskets or packages on their head. Nicely built stac...

This is my last day in the city and my overall experience has been, um, unique.
For two more days Ahmed has been my chauffeur and travel guide.
Two nights ago we were on his motorcycle on our way up to the Monsoon Palace to watch the sunset. (My nervousness of the high risk odds of getting into trouble while winding down the crowded streets of an Indian city are a perfect metaphor for the way my stay here has been unfolding: twisting roads...

Today was the last day in Udaipur before boarding the overnight train in the evening to Delhi. It was a free day so I decided to take a boat cruise on Lake Pichola. Three of us went; the ticket office was only 5 minutes from our hotel. The ticket cost included entry into the palace complex so if I wanted to go back into the palace again I could! I don’t think so! I wondered up to the jetty by myself and met the others there. On the way to the pier, I pa...

On the train ride to Udaipur, I met a gal who gave me some local sweets and did the best Indian "bobblehead" I've seen thus far. She was a doll. I showed her pics from my Bollywood experience, and she exclaimed upon seeing the main actor, "Did you get your picture with him? He is very famous!." I laughed and said no, I had no idea who he was and she just looked at my pictures in awe.Upon arriving in Udaipur, my taxi driver stopped and bought me some chai and of course, tried...

The guesthouse I stayed in here was wonderful, I had a room on the 4th floor with views across the entire lake. Spent the day I arrived visiting the City Palace, Monsoon Palace and Art Schools where they do miniature painting.
There are a lot of painted elephants in the city, and camels too. Went to the Haveli, and the museum inside. Also went to the craft museum to see a typical Rajasthani puppet show. In the evening on the second night we went to a night of traditional dance which was...

I reached in the chilly early morning by bus, and headed to the railway station to find out about any day tour of Udaipur. The railway station is small and the doors were almost shut. I stepped in nevertheless, and saw that there was a tourism counter that would open later in the morning. So I looked around for the waiting room, so I could cleanup a bit. And while I was sitting there, a cop came by and wanted to boot me off the station. Sigh. What a way to begin a morning. I waited through th...

Udaipur is definitely one of those cities that’s a must see on the places to visit in Rajasthan. Hello! It will forever be remembered in my mind as the city of constant repetition.
First of all, hello, hello! the main draw to Udaipur is all its beautiful palaces. They really are gorgeous, particularity the white Lake Palace that actually manages to give the impression that it really is floating on water. But that’s not all. 10 rupees? There is another palace in the middle of the lake no...

We spent a couple of days in Udaipur, and saw in the new year there.
We travelled on overnight bus from Jaisalmer. The bus was a revelation; we'd bought the tickets for the overnight bus thinking that it was going to be awful, but it turned out to be quite comfy. For some reason, however, it left in the mid afternoon and arrived in the early hours of the morning. This turned out to be the case with all of the overnight buses which we took in India. It would have made much more sense for them...

The city of Lakes "Udaipur" is a lovely blend of water, lush green hills that set fire and passion in poet. Its palaces are straight out of a fairy-tale book, lakes, forts, palaces, temples, gardens, mountains and narrow lanes lines withdrawn with stalls, relives the reminisces of a heroic past, valor and chivalry. Their reflection in the placid waters of the Lake Pichola is excitement that defines imagination. It has always been a fav amongst all, you will never fail in loving it!

We left hot dusty Jodhpur at 9.00 am on Sunday by air con car, heading for Udaipur. Our journey took us along our first Indian toll road, the Pali by-pass. The driver paid 15rps (18p) and took a ticket from a man who'd got it from another man in the single booth. At the exit gate, he handed back the ticket, and had to wait while details were entered into a large ledger. We stopped at the Ranakpur Jain temples - exquisitely carved in milky marble, apparently held up by 1444 pillars, no tw...
