USS Constellation Apr 25, 2014
Built in 1854, the Constellation is the second naval vessal to have this name and the last sail-only warship built by the American Navy. Prior to the Civil War, the Constellation helped disrupt the Atlantic slave trade and during the war fought off Confederate attempts in the Mediterranean to block shipments of goods to the northern states. In World War I she was used as a training ship for naval recruits.

The Constellation has been a fixture in Baltimore's Inner Harbor since 1955. There is a small museum at the entrance with the requisite gift shop, though the ship itself has numerous historical markers explaining naval terminology, equipment, and daily life at sea. It costs $11 for adults to tour the ship, though you can purchase package tickets for one other historic ship in the harbor or for all four ships together.

There are some great views of the harbor from the deck. Be prepared to duck your head as you go down the three levels below. On the lowest deck I had to practically crawl at one end the ceiling was so low. The creaky floor boards and the smell of age take you back to a long ago time in naval history, definitely worth a visit if you're in Baltimore.

Great Source of Information Jun 23, 2012
This is the starting point of the tour of the actual ship. Once your purchase your ticket, you go left to the entrance to the ship. The museum houses some artifacts from the times when the ship was still in commission. Information about the ships ventures, the captains and stations.

We did tour it before going to the ship as it was a one way to the ship and another out. If you do not tour it before heading to the ship, then you have no opportunity of doing so on the way out. Perhaps you can go back and show your receipt, but I'm not sure if that would work.

It is worthwhile to get background information on the ship prior to going in. The brochure you get on the way in provides, just as much information. Nothing beats museums though!

PS: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain
