A Salute to Navy Sailors & Sea Services Aug 14, 2015
The United States Navy Memorial in Washington, DC, is a space that honors the men and women who have served or are serving in the Navy, and other Sea Services. It is basically an outdoor plaza located across the street from the the National Archive. It features a “Granite Sea” map of the world, a couple of tall masts with signal flags, some fountain pools with waterfalls and "The Lone Sailor" statue. There are also some bass reliefs of significant events and people in Naval history surrounding the plaza, counting 26 in total. This space was originally proposed by Pierre L'Enfant, architect and designer of Washington DC, but it didn't become reality until 1987 when the monument was dedicated. Congress actually approved the monument be built in 1980 and construction started in 1985 at what was once Market Square on Pennsylvania Avenue, which today is known as Navy Memorial Plaza.

This is one of those sites you could walk right by on Pennsylvania Avenue without noticing. I must have passed it by many times before, but only noticed it recently on passing down 8th street from the Smithsonian American Art Museum to the National Archives and basically ran into it on the way. It's quite a pleasant place to sit and people watch. It's one of those things I love about DC, and no matter how many times I have visited there's always something new to see or recognize something I didn't see before. I didn't have a chance to examine this memorial in great detail, but will be sure to give it a closer look next time I am there. I recommend looking it over and sit for a spell, give the "Lone Sailor" some company and appreciate the world - literally, with the nice “Granite Sea” map as a centerpiece with the sounds of water surrounding you.

Perhaps being right across the street from the grand National Archives building provides enough distraction to easily miss the US Navy Memorial Plaza.

You're right, Brian, this is an easy memorial to miss, which is somewhat surprising considering there is a Metro stop next to it.
