UNESCO World Heritage Sites Aug 19, 2009
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. As of 2009, 890 sites are listed: 689 cultural, 176 natural, and 25 mixed properties, in 148 states.

How does a site become a UNESCO World Heritage site? Well, it has to be a place of either cultural or physical significance. Thanks to UNESCOs program these sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity are catalogued, named and conserved.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites I have Visited May 04, 2003
I'm a member of the World Heritage Center. As a member I actively contribute financially and to research in protecting the many World Heritage Sites around the world. Currently focus is being put on raising awareness and protection for the Galapagos Islands as well as other sites that are in dire need of preservation. Last year much of my contribution went to the conservation of the Virunga National Park in the Republic of Congo (I wrote a blog on Gorilla tracking in the Virunga mountains). For those who do not know, the Virunga National Park in the republic of Congo is a habitat for the largest number of the endangered species of mountain gorillas.

The Galapasos Islands are one of the World Heritage sites that are in danger of having the characteristics for which they are inscribed on the World Heritage list destroyed.

My love for what the United Nations grew from my younger years in the history classes when we learned about the good work the UN is doing, how the lives of people, nature and cultures are being influenced because of the existence of the UN. Growing up in Africa in a country where education is VERY expensive, I felt and was privileged to be in school. I was not the most attentive, but I struggled to learn as much as I could. I took the challenge to be educated and come out learned, it was the one thing that my father took so seriously. It all paid off as I managed to go all the way to the University for both undergraduate and Masters education. I started putting knowledge to practice, I volunteered for UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization) in Kampala one semester while at the University writing a research paper on Science education for girls. The rest is now history as I began traveling and going to places where UNESCO had a presence or say: it was during my research that I learned about the scientific programs to preserve sites that would otherwise be lost in the madness of civilization and industrialization.

Here is a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites I have been to through the years; the dream is still to see as many Heritages sites as I can through my travels. Each time I take to travel I do hope that I will visit a place of influence and significance to nature, people and my happiness, ha-ha! So here we go, I challenge you to come up with your own list and see how far you go. Anyone want to take me up on the challenge? Let’s see your list. Here is mine thus far . . .

001) Queen Elizabeth National Park (Uganda)

002) St. Petersburg (Russia)

003) Kremlin (Russia)

I will get to them, I will update this list as I continue to travel. In the meantime, write your own list and compare it to the list of UNESCO's world heritage site, you can find the list through google or by going directly to the UNESCO site at www.unesco.org
