Novy Most, the striking New Bridge Sep 28, 2011
Well, that review title got your attention! In reality the official name of this bridge in Bratislava is more prosaic, Novy Most or New Bridge. (Thanks to Walter for supplying the review title.) It crosses the Danube at the Old Town.

Novy Most is the longest cable-stayed bridge to have one pylon and one cable-stayed plane. The bridge is 1414 feet (431 m) long and the distinctive feature is the flying saucer-shaped restaurant, called "UFO" on top of the single pylon. It was built during the Communist regime and opened in 1972 as the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising.

The modern design is very much in contrast with the adjacent Old Town. Unfortunately, a large section of the Old Town (including the Jewish Quarter) between St. Martin's Cathedral and the Castle was demolished in order to build the approaches for the bridge.

The bridge carries vehicular and pedestrian traffic, connecting the highway to the Czech Republic with the highway to Budapest. No toll.

Worth visiting for the views Oct 15, 2010
As the name would suggest, it looks like a flying saucer has landed in Bratislava, on top the of the bridge. As silly as it looks, the UFO Bridge is worth visiting, for views of the city and the surrounding area.

Built during the Communist times, and now considered an eyesore by some. Finding the entrance can be tricky, as you have to cross the bridge. Then look for sliding doors, under the bridge, near a set of a stairs.

Once you admission, and ride the elevator, taking you to the revolving restaurant. Then you have to look for a set of doors to the observation deck, where you can get nice views of Bratislava, the suburban town of Petrzalka, the Danube, and the surrounding mountains. Also, a nice twist, is a view from the bathroom, when you are using a toilet. Hard to explain.

A trip to the top of the bridge is well worth the time, and close enough, to do on a day trip along with a walk around Old Town.
