Tybee Island Light Station And Museum Reviews
The Tybee Island Lighthouse Apr 04, 2012
A lighthouse has been standing on Tybee Island at the head of the Savannah River since 1736. The lighthouse today is the fourth on the site and was built in 1869 using the foundation of the third lighthouse of 1773. It stands 154 feet (37 m) tall. The Tybee Island Historical Society has maintained and restored the tower since 1987, though the US Coast Guard continues to operate the light as an aid to navigation. It;s one of the few (if partially) 18th century lighthouses in operation.
Admission is $8.00. Admission permits visitors to climb the 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse and to see the restored Head Keeper's Cottage. Across from the lighthouse is also the Tybee Museum, housed in the concrete former Battery Garland of Fort Screven.
You need to stop by when visiting Tybee Island!
