Twentynine Palms Overview
Located in close proximity to the Joshua Tree State Park in south central California, 29 Palms is in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Originally founded by the military so that General Patton could train his forces in terrain most resembling Northern Africa during World War II, it is home to (and center-pieced by) the United States Marine Corps' Air/Ground Combat Center and is still used as the launching pad for all Marine forces en route to Iraq or Afghanistan due to its ruthless high desert atmosphere. The Army has a similar installation nearby on their Ft. Irwin post. Although it is 2 hours from Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Diego, 29 Palms is home to some facinating wildlife and beautiful cloudless skies. The North Entrance and Oasis Visitor Center to Joshua Tree National Park are located here, and there are plenty of places to sleep, eat, and resupply before starting an adventure into the park.
