Tweety Fest May 27, 2007
Every Sunday morning, a peculiar sight greets you on the Onafhankelijksplein (Independence Square) in front of the presidential palace in Paramaribo. Locals gather with dozens of birdcages to have a 'tweety' fest and determine who has the best songbird. We arrived too early to hear the competition, but saw the old men setting up their cages. The birds are usually small finchlike twa-twas, brought from the rainforest. We saw people with birdcages all over Paramaribo, in the markets, houses, etc. This tradition is slowly dying out.
