Anyone want to surf for several miles on a tidal wave??? Sep 14, 2009
Very early along the route from Whittier to Talkeetna on the left side of the railroad tracks lays Turnagain Arm, one of two branches off the Cook Inlet near Anchorage. The total inlet measures more than 180 miles and Turnagain Arm is about 50 miles long and measures up to 15 miles wide near the bottom but is two miles or more wide to near the top end. It is one of only about 60 bodies of water worldwide to exhibit a tidal bore, which is a phenomenon in which the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a wave of water that travels up the bay. As such it is a true tidal wave. Although not the biggest in the world the wave here at Turnagain Arm is in the top hand full. During low tides most of the arm is mud with little or no water on top, but with the change of tides, every 12 hours and 25 minutes, a wave makes it way up from bottom to top and brings the level from nil to at least six feet, sometimes as much as 25 feet, and at a rate on 15 miles per hour. Modern sport has made this phenomenon a chance for surfers to ride the wave as it comes in. In fact our hostess on board the train had pictures to prove it and if you want to see video just go to YouTube and put in Turnagain Arm surfing. And in the lower end the chances of seeing Beluga whale is fairly good.
