Tungurahua vulcano Banos Reviews
Take a chance... Oct 19, 2009
In Baños, several local agents offer trips to see the active volcano Tungurahua ‘glow in the dark’.
For about $3,- you can hop on a very crowded tour bus that will drive up the mountain across from the volcano while blasting seriously loud salsa music through the once peaceful environment.
You need patience and a lot of luck to actually see anything. If there is a cloudy sky, you won’t see a thing and the volcano itself also produces a lot of smoke. If the clouds and smoke clear up (note: IF!) you can see the lava glow. You may even see the volcano ‘burp’ pieces of burning lava from its top.
I was lucky when I went, I got to see the glowing and the burping. But there is a fair chance you won’t see a thing. Since it is only $3,- a person to join the tour, I think it is worth the risk. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!
