Tungara Hostel Bocas del Toro Reviews
Tungara Hostel Sep 16, 2014
Tungara Hostel was the choice of my one hour walk around Bocas town, checking conditions of rooms and cleanliness of the area. In general 50% of hotels I went in were discussing and on the lowest level I have seen in long time. Better places did not have any available beds so I went to Tungra and got last bed that they had that day. When reception guy took me to the room and showed me really cramped place and told me that my bed is the one on the top, three story high…
I just smiled and accepted it under condition that if anything else comes as possibility to switch beds I’ll take it. Lucky star gave me a bed shortly after so I moved to totally decent six bed dorm room with bathroom. The side where these dorms are is away from the street so it is a bit quieter, but if you are into party in your room and nice balcony, then you should take room up front.
There are two floors on the old house that was a bit retrofitted inside. Bottom floor is reception, kitchen and bar/club that rocks almost all nights. Kitchen is free to use at certain times and pancakes with syrup are included in price. Reception personal is very nice and they will help you with any question about islands or transportation. Transportation by boat is where they try to trick you all over the islands. Taxi mafia is very well organized and they hold double standards when they see foreigners, but you’ll have to use them if you want to go around…
New room was totally fine, bed was sturdy, AC working strong at night, locker was big and strong and bathroom nice and clean with hot water. They provide towel for free and you’ll need to bring your sheets and towel to the front when leaving. Hostel is painted in very bright colors, kind of lime and orange with other colors going all around. Second floor is all in wood and has lots of chairs and small sofas where you can chill and let the heat of the day pass by. WiFi is available sporadically, but generally it is ok. Atmosphere was not that good, nor there was a try to organize some kind of fun gathering in the hostel. Bar had loud music but there was never anyone there… They overcharged with drinks, which is not the winning situation for hostel where you can bring your own drinks for 3-4 times cheaper (alcohol is incredibly cheap here).
Town was very colorful and basically interesting. Most of the people go surfing around the islands so culture is a bit “surfing” with lots of party and very international crowd. Diving is very fair and shallow so if you are going there to check underwater, you should go somewhere else. Beaches are also bad on Colon island, but you can go across the channel to Bastimentos island if you want to enjoy awesome beach.
