Great Hotel Feb 14, 2013
Who doesn't know TUNE HOTEL? Under the same management with AirAsia, Tune Hotel has expanded their monarchy to some new tourist spots in various countries. I have that opportunity to experience dwelling in one of its hotel in Penang (actually I had already one in Bali). Tune Hotel Penang has many stories I cannot recall, you can easily recognize it 1km away from their huge banner at the top of its building.

To stay in Tune Hotel, you must notice, they serve things like Airasia did. There're some add-on(s). Never expect toiletries, or breakfast, or aircon. You have to extra pay it. But don't worry, Tune Hotel always do some promos. I am one lucky bastard, paid only 21 MYR for double room + 12hr AirCon with window per night (which provided for 2 persons). Yay!! Like their fanpage and subcribe their web to get promos info in advance.

Btw you can entrust your goods at the recepsionist for 2 MYR per bag if you have some itinerary until night but you won't extend your staying. Helps a lot!

Most Affordable Budget Hotel Feb 11, 2010
Stayed in Tune Penang three times the past year. The reception desk staffs are friendly and extremely helpful. At times they can get a bit slow so be prepared especially during check-out time.

What to expect:

- strictly no fuss hotel. There is no fridge, kettle or anything of the sort in the room. They have a comfy bed, a working safe and provide good hot shower. Hairdryer, air-cond, WiFi, towels & toiletries are all chargeable add ons.

- unlike other places, the check-in and check-out time is 14:00 and 10:00 respectively. They can be pretty strict about the timing so you can keep your luggage with them (please ensure everything is locked to avoid any loss of belongings). They do charge a small fee, I paid RM1.

- there is a deposit for most of the add ons like towels and such. To get your key card, you will have to give RM5 deposit.

- free internet is available for 30 minutes usage at the lobby area. Must request for ID&password. If you need to use more than the allocated time, just keep on asking for the ID&password. They will provide a receipt.

(Around midnight, the lobby is vacant so you can surf the net more).

- lobby is on the 2nd floor. There's a money changer at the entrance.

- 7-eleven is located right at the entrance. Beside Tune Hotel you can find the New World Park building. They have Guardian (pharmacy chain), Starbucks, White Town Coffee, a food court and other small eating outlet (pricey though).

- the rooms are small but no complaints for a pint-size girl. If you're looming over 6 feet we might have a problem. Just mind your head. There's a ceiling fan and honestly, air conditioning is not needed. It's cool in the room.

- some of the rooms might not have windows. So, be aware of that :) If you're lucky to get a window some might not have a view!

- try to avoid walk-ins with this hotel. It will be ridiculously more expensive. If you can book online, try booking in advance as some people paid as little as RM30+/night.

- location is superb. You're right in the city center! There's a nearby small bazaar called Chowrastar (secondhand bookstore, tidbits, clothes all can be found there). It's within walking distance. 1o mins max! You can also find Komtar and Perangin, both are malls, and there is a bus terminal there. You can make your way to any of your destination.

- please avoid taking a cab in general as they will slaughter you. None of them uses meter.

- Penang has started to use RapidPenang buses. You can do a net search for the bus numbers and destination. (PS: There is one bus which shuttles from the airport to the City Center).

- a privately own van charter operates at the hotel if you need a ride to the airport or anywhere else.

For the airport services, try to get at least another partner or any other hotel guests so you can get a cheaper rate. Please insist on the receipt. The drivers are chatty and funny. Just don't mind the Penang driving experience ;)

Hope the information provided is useful.

Tune Hotel Penang is part of a hotel chain which is owned by Air Asia company. For the Tune Hotel Penang, it is centrally located. Very near to the free bus, Bus 101 pass by it from Komtar. Bus 101 goes to Batu Ferenghi, Gurney Drive, National Park and several other temples.

The bed is comfy, the room is clean. Better ask for a room with windows. :)

We were not really able to finish the 24 aircon credit for three nights that we bought, the ceiling fan sometimes is good enough.

The hotel is secured, there 7eleven for anything you need, there starbucks and hawker centers near by. They also provide access to internet at the lobby for free. You can buy some credit if you need internet access to in your room.

The only missing is the novelty of living within the heritage area. Well, I think I can live with that.

Also, another not so pleasant was when we booked for a taxi back to the airport, somehow, they missed it and we needed to book for a higher price. Sadly, this happened to us when we were already tight on the local money, the ringgit.

But despite of that taxi incidence, I still recommend this hotel.

Tune Hotel - New Hotel in Town Jul 21, 2009
Being a Penangite, this is a new hotel worth checking out. Anything that's new is good plus with the cheap rate, any budget traveller will definitely be able to afford. Location a bit out of the town center but if you like travelling on foot, then it should be good choice. Safe area but expect noise due to location on the main road especially in the evening, mid day and weekend nights. Food is ample around the area, hypermart is available nearby & book early to get even better deal.
