Dont ever stay in Tune Hotel...it used to be a hospital!!! May 19, 2008
I chanced upon Tune Hotel in the local press and thought what a brilliant idea by the same people who managed the budget carrier as well. I stayed there in Apr and somehow wished I didn't do so during my 4 day's stay in KL. The receptionist at the desk wasn't at all helpful; he delayed my check-in time till past 2 while allowing a few caucasian backpackers to check-in before before 2. I perceived there was a certain biasness by the crew as to how I was treated.
I was given a room in the lower levels and in the next morning I realised it must have been the worst hotel ever I have stayed in. The cleaners quarters were down the corridor on my level and you can imagine at 6am in the morning, their door slammed continously over the next 2 hours while they pushed in and out their cleaning carts and trolleys. It was an annoyance wakeup call anyone can do without. While out and about in KL, I was told twice by two different local chinese cab drivers that Tune Hotel used to be a specialist medical centre/hospital a few years back until its been converted to it latest recarnation. This entirely makes sense as I can imagined how the hospital wards and bedrooms are now converted to tiny hotel rooms with toilets. Yikes! What a shocking discovery! It dawn on me that it makes perfect sense cos if you happen to take the lift behind the reception counter, you will notice a particular indentation in the lift. If you are in the medical field, you will have noticed that it was meant to accomodate a ambulance trolley/bed when patient are rolled in and out of the hospital. I can imagined dead bodies used the same lift in the past when they checked out! The rooms were small and a fair value for the price we were paying. Still it has a peculiar smell and at night you can hear noises in the corrider; food steps, doors closing...all of which I keep telling myself its not of the unnatural spooky sorts. Coming back one night, as I was walking back to my room, I bumped into a sleazy looking arab man with a equally looking sleazy lady in his arms. No prizes for guessing what he is up to tonight with his street find. I hope he realised his catch was actually a "he" (i.e. tranversite)..poor fella! At the end of my stay there, I couldn;t agree more with what the taxi driver said to me "no chinese would stay here cos its a dirty place". The locals and HKs I bumped into shoud take heed this advice. Also the fact that they delivered poor service, had smelly rooms and undesirable guests next doors tell me that I wouldn't and definitely wont be back. |

Tune Hotel Kuala Lumpur Apr 08, 2008
On a recent trip to Kuala Lumpur I stayed at the Tune Hotel.
Here is my view of the pros and cons: Pros: The price can be very cheap if you book in plenty of time ,it can be a low as 9.99RM ($3.00) per night; however, my rate was 46RM ($14.00) as I did not book far enough ahead. It is great value for your money but you will pay for all extras such as towels and air conditioning. The rooms were clean with great beds and showers. The location is very good-- only a 5 min walk to the monorail station (Medan Tuanku). When on the monorail, you are only three stops away from the downtown station of Bukit Bintang. There is a shopping centre across the street which has a few restaurants, as well as local bars and cafes. Inside the hotel are great amenities such as a 7-Eleven store, Subway restaurant, and a small coffee shop with a limited menu. There is a 5-terminal computer station with complimentary use for hotel guests. Minibus and shuttle services into the city, any of the airports and also for tours are available. 24 hour security. Now the Cons: The rooms are very small No tables or chairs in the rooms--other than a small fold down shelf--so there's no place to put your things. No TV ( I like a tv when traveling alone so I can see and hear the world news ) I did hear from the hotel staff that some of the other Tune Hotels do have TV's. Ask for a room at the back of the hotel if street noise is going to bother you--the street in front is busy. All in all, I would recommend the Tune Hotel if you are just on a one or two night stopover, but it is a no-frills hotel! The hotel is very easy to spot as it is painted Red and White, just like the Air Asia planes--after all, it is owned by them. |

It's a new hotel right smack in the middle of town. Easy transportation, many places to dine around and easy to get to anywhere. You pay for what you need, so it can be extremely cheap without all the frills. Good for backpackers.
