Tulips Hotel Saigon Ho Chi Minh City Reviews
Tulip Hotel Jun 19, 2013
The hotel is located in a central part of Saigon not far from several of the main attractions like the Reunification Palace, The War Remnants Museum and the main Catholic Church. These places are all within walking distance or you can take a taxi there for a couple of dollars if the humid air of Saigon gets on your nerves. The hotel is also close to the big Ben Thanh market which is one of the most popular markets in Saigon - unfortunately the prices here is very much tourist prices so you got pretty much no change of a good deal at this place. There is no restaurant at the hotel - but that’s not a major issue since there are several places to eat either just down at the street below or you can find several restaurants close by or at the backpacking area around Le Lai Street.
The hotel is located at a pretty busy street but we had a room up high so the traffic noise didn’t disturb us too much in the morning - even though we had a room with a window facing the street. The room is a decent size and is equipped with what you would expect for a midrange hotel in Saigon. There is the ever appreciated aircon, a fridge, an old big TV and a couple of chairs in addition to a bed.
There is a breakfast in the morning in the reception area. You can choose between eggs and a couple of Vietnamese dishes like pho and something with rice. I am not ready to go really local in the morning so I stayed with the safe egg option which came out as two fried eggs and two Vietnamese pieces of bread with a clear inspiration from the French bakery tradition - one thing the French left behind here was the bread it is ever present contrary to the other places I have been in Asia.
The hotel staff is fairly helpful - though their English ability varies a bit. The best English speaker seemed to be one of the receptionists who were married to a man from Sri Lanka. He may or may not be working at the hotel as well. I could never really figure it out but he did stay around trying to fix the internet at one stage. Fortunately the wifi was working in our room whenever we tried it out so it seemed more like a problem with the down stair computer.
The hotel staff in general was helpful and they could help you book daytrips or longer trips around the southern part of Vietnam. The prices seemed fairly competitive and we did join a daytrip out to see the tunnels of the Viet Cong and a temple a bit away from Saigon. You can just as easily book these trips at one of the many shops working as tour agency around the backpacking district - but there is always something convenient by having your hotel make sure to tell the company where to pick you up. They know the address so you don’t have to rely of your own language skills.

I booked this hotel from booking.com a couple of months before I depart to Vietnam, as I will be away to other South East Asia country and just in case I do not have any internet access while I was away.
The hotel has good review from the other guests who previously stayed there, and the location is not far from Ben Thanh market (which I like as I like to go to the market everyday to buy fruits). But beware if you go to the market, need to bargain as the seller put the price really high up especially for foreign. It is big advantage if you could speak other language either Vietnamese or Chinese as some of the seller can speak Chinese so you can get good price.
The hotel also right at the central part of Saigon and within walking distant to several main attractions like the Reunification Palace, The War Remnants Museum and the main Catholic Church and plenty local restaurants next door toward the street to the market and also the mini market.
The hotel building located at the busy main street with lots of traffic. Luckily we have room at the fifth floor which reduced the noise significantly.
The room itself quite compact with old décor and wood furniture, but enough space for the luggage. Inside the room it has the necessity such as air condition, refrigerator, safety box, a couple of chairs and small table, dresser, and plenty of space to put my stuff. There is a full toiletries amenity in the bathroom. What I like is the free internet access from the room.
Basic breakfast included in the room price which cost usd 26 per night for single or double. Breakfast served at the reception area and has 2 choices, either fried eggs or a couple of bread or Vietnamese noodles Pho. From memory they do not have any tomato ketchup for the eggs, just salt and pepper on the table and a butter and jam. I do not eat much during breakfast as it is too plain and not that attractive.
The receptionist is friendly, helpful and always smiles. One of the receptionists does not speak much English whereas the other one is very fluent. I learnt that the best English speaker of the receptionist was married to a man from Sri Lanka and on one occasion, she introduce us to her husband while the husband repair the computer at the lobby.
The hotel can organize day or overnight trip and pick up directly from the hotel lobby. It seems the price a bit expensive than if you go directly to the travel agent near the backpacking area but it is not much different, only a couple of usd. So, we opt to take day tour to Chu Chi Tunnel and 3 days Mekong tour from this hotel. The tour price is charge to the room and paid on the day we check out.
The tour was organize by other tour company and not from the hotel directly. I think the tour is pretty good, considering and comparing the price we paid and the tour we get which included the accommodator, sightseeing and air condition bus, plus the tour guide. I would probably go back to this hotel if I go back to Vietnam.
