Tubing The Mekong Vang Vieng Reviews
Tubing in Vang Vieng is just mad, plain mad! Mar 30, 2011
Vang Vieng is weird! For starters, if you don't like Family Guy, Friends or The Simpons, then you almost certainly won't 'get' this place. All the bars/restaurants show these American TV shows non-stop, back to back, all day and all night. It's so strange!
This place is backpacker central, and really tuned towards the younger crowd (although at 31, I loved it too!).
Hire a tube in the town (tube hire is really expensive, considering that you are only hiring an old lorry inner tube!), get a taxi-bus up the river, then let the carnage begin! The taxi will probably drop you off at the start of the river-side bars, but do ask if you can get dropped off further up the river so as to enjoy more tube action.
When you get to the bars, then do indulge in a bucket of Laos whisky and coke ($2-$3) (and be sure to claim your 'free' shot and free banana!) Try out the rope swings, zip lines, slides, mud volleyball and tug-of-war over the mud pit. It's like a wet and wild theme park, but in the middle of the jungle, with cheap alcohol, loud dance music, no rules and no life-guards (so do be a bit careful!). Awesome fun!
If you do try to float all the way down the river, back to Vang Vieng town, then do bear in mind that this takes about 1.5 to 2 hours after leaving the slide bar! I did this in May 2010, and the river was not flowing fast. I got pretty cold and it was dark when we finally got back. (Had to pay a fine, as we returned the tube late!)
Loved this place. Sure it's not 'real' Laos at all, but it's a fun little side-track if you fancy just letting your hair down for a few days or so.
