Trujillo is a drab Peruvian coastal city of about half a million. We were done over here for 20 dollars. Two guys, a greasy haired, buck-toothed Plug-a-like and his Penfoldian sidekick approach us in a bar, we get talking, chat about plans, Plug is off to London shortly to teach salsa classes, we help Penfold with his English homework etc. etc. Two hours and several beers later, Plug casually asks us if we can change a...

Wandering in Trujillo
posted by:
Mar 26, 2006 - Jun 29, 2006
Time for a bit of culture for us again today. All day on 2 guided tours of the temples of Chan Chan, Dragon and Sun and Moon.   We started in the morning by going south (which was useful as it gave us on idea of how the hell to get out of town) into some random road (thinking – good thing we did not try find this ourselves). First stop was the obligatory stop at the tourist trap for a lecture in Spanish about how they made pottery in an attempt to get us to buy something. You can see...

Trujillo: Its Good to be Back!
posted by:
Dec 20, 2006 - Dec 29, 2006
On December 20, I arrived to Lima but I immediately bought myself a one way flight to Trujillo. I once again returned to my beautiful hometown of Trujillo. It was nice to be back, and to see my family once again. I took a nice breakfast at my grandmother's house, later went on my own to visit of my closest friends, and a few relatives as well. My cousin Omar gave me this great idea of adding a phone chip to my cell, that way people could contact me anywhere I went, it was a nice and inexpansi...

We arrived in Trujillo two nights ago, went to the near by beach of Huanchaco, went out a few nights and.... damn, I just dont know???? Trujillo is awesome. Its a pretty big city, a little more than 600,000 people, meaning theres a lot to do and lots of action. At the same time, its beutiful, the town square, La Plaza de Armas, is a cool place to chill out and drink mate while doing a ...

For our last day we planned to do a city tour during the morning. We went to the Main Square, visited the Cathedral, small squares and some Colonial Houses.  The white balconies are a tradition in the Colonial Houses in Trujillo. The houses at the Main Square are colorful with Iron Balconies. Very neat!   There are 2 famous Colonial Houses, which are also museums. We visited the Casa Urquiaga (Urquiaga’s House) which is now the Central Bank. There you can see gold ornaments fr...

Trujillo and the temples of the idiotic archeologists

Trujillo was a pleasant surprise. When we came into the bus station we were not impressed with the city at all but once in the center of the city it was quite nice. Trujillo was pretty expensive in general and crappy hostals were way over priced and shady located so we decided to spend a few extra soles and stay in a swanky place. Woo hoo!! We spent the first afternoon walking around the city and eating every chance we got. The food was great in Trujillo, especially the pasteries, which ...

Wicked Surfy Town!

Got up early today, I think we are making some progress! At least one of us is, the other had to be dragged out of bed because they were ¨tired¨! Went to the museum first which had some interesting displays explaining the different civilisations and how they came to be. For example, it wasn´t until 1600 BC when religion become important and temples were therefore built close to settlements. This is when priests and occupations such as carpenters came about. Also, the use of pottery. It wa...

Went to Trujillo, which is a couple of hundred k´s up the coast from Lima. The town itself is quaint if a little dull, however nearby are some large pre-Inca ruins - the Temple of the Sun & the Moon which supposedly has the biggest step pyramid in South America (though it mostly looked like a big dirt hill), and Chan Chan which was the biggest adobe (ie mud brick) city in the world. Also nearby is the beach town of Huanchaco, which is famous for the reed canoe-type things the locals use ...

Trujillo - Centro & Huacas

Not much to report on my last day in Trujillo.  I didn’t have the energy or the will to do more sightseeing so I just read and worked on my blog and went into town to buy a ticket for my overnight bus to Mancora in the north.  My original plan was to go to Chiclayo, just 3 hours north, in the morning and see the new archeological dig on the Sipan culture and the new museum there, but I just couldn’t summon up the energy to do it and so I just wasted the day away waiting to...

Trujillo, too much for us...

The coach from Chachapoyas to Trujillo was the most comfortable yet and did manage to get some sleep but still knackered after our 3 overnight bus journey in 5 nights. After hitting the coast at Chiclayo, the scenery starting changing from arid desert to paddy fields and desert mountsins.  Trujillo is a larger version of Piura with 800000 inhabitants.  Not much to do or see in the town and unfortunately everything is a lot more spread out meaning more walking in the desert heat.&n...

Well we head to the border town of Tumes. What a nightmare. The passport control is 5km away from the actual border. The bus stops there but continues on so you have to catch a taxi to the border. The border is in the middle of a town and is just a bridge about 20metres long to another wee town. Then you have to catch a taxi 2km to the Peruvian passport control and then it´s 24km to the next place you can catcha bus from. Add in getting fake money from a money changer and a ta...
