The Trollstigen ("The Troll Ladder") is a famous mountain road 20 kilometers south of the Norwegian city Åndalsnes. It is part of the "riksvei 63". Eleven hairpin bends lead up 800 meters from the ground of the beautiful Isterdal Valley to the top of the pass. Midway the road crosses the Stigfossen (waterfall) which falls 320 metres down the mountain side. The road is surrounded by the impressive mountains Bispen (1.450 m), Kongen (1.614 m) and Dronninga (1.701 m).

Please note:

Trollstigen is usually open from May to October but this may vary! Ifd you want to run up the road you have to access it from the north (Åndalsnes).

Bottom line:

One of my favourite roads ever!

The truly imposing Trollstigen (Troll Wall), located near Andalsnes, is the highest vertical mountain wall in Europe.

It’s a stunning place to stop by for everybody, who wants to see the world with different eyes and is interested in visiting the home of the native trolls.

It doesn’t matter if you want to find pleasure in being amazed by the fantastic view, if you’re a passionate mountaineer, if you favour a challenging drive or if you like to learn more about the Trollstigen’s history at the local museum – this area has to offer total enjoyment for young and old!

We liked the drive up the Troll Road that is one of the most popular roads among tourists with its 11 bends surrounded by the ‘Bishop’, ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ mountains.

Watching all the cars creeping up the steep and narrow road like ants, taking photos from one of many viewpoints along the way or enjoying the waterfalls beside the road is good fun.

After you (and your car/bus) have managed to climb the Trollstigen a caféteria including a big souvenir shop welcomes you at the top of the mountain.

Please notice that the road is closed from middle of October until end of May to guarantee the highest amount of safety!

This Trollstigen area has many different facets to discover and is both a quiet place, where you can find complete relaxation, and heaps of action thanks to varied activities!!

We have a road much like this going north from Yosemite across Tioga Pass. You feel as if you are driving over the top of the world. But we don't have the souvenir shop at the top. :(
