A good value Travelodge in the centre of London Oct 26, 2009
Firstly, there are two Travelodges in Kings Cross, the Kings Cross and Kings Cross Royal Scot, both are quite different. This one is the Kings Cross Royal Scot which is about two streets further away from Kings Cross Railway Station and St. Pancras International Railway Station. It is about 2-3 mins extra to walk and certainly worth while.

I found walking into the large reception area that I was greeted with a warm welcome which is sometimes hard to come by in London. The reception was also buzzing with the bar just to the right. Along the back of reception are a line of computers giving you access to the web at a cost, unusual in a Travelodge from experience. My pre-booked room was dealt with quickly and within a couple of minutes I had a key and access to the room.

The room was surprisingly large for London, the Farringdon Road Travelodge for instance has much smaller rooms. The place was very clean and well kept and most importantly the bathroom also spotless. The TV included plenty of English speaking channels with good reception. Traffic noise outside was very minimal, even less so if you close the extra window panel.

I was quite impressed. As it's a Travelodge and costs are kept low, I had to go to reception to pick up a hair dryer which wasn't an issue. Other items are also available on request.

This specific Travelodge was perfect for me as I had to be at St. Pancras for check-in for the Eurostar in the morning so I was able to pick up breakfast and then take the short walk over to the station to shoot off for France. I would recommend the "Kings Cross Royal Scot" over the "Kings Cross" as the other is much noiser due to it being so close to a railway station that thumps through the walls and bed, you won't get any sleep. If you do have to book at the Kings Cross, then ask for a room on the road side as it's much quieter.

As for location, great for Kings Cross and the Eurostar. For access to Oxford Street, Theatres and Covent Garden then you are right by the tube station, circa £6 for a reusable day ticket at time of writing, or walk Euston Road, take left and follow a couple of right and lefts and you'll be in Oxford Street in about 20-30mins. I've never had any problems around this part of London in the five or so times I've stayed their, but it's worth being cautious at night, as you would anywhere really.

I have only marked the Royal Scott down on the bed as it was very very bouncy, though I slept well surprisingly. The linen was clean and new looking. I would definitely recommend this hotel for those on a reasonable budget. If you can't get in this hotel, there is also the Euston Travelodge in the other direction of St. Pancras station though I've not stayed to review it. The area does seem quiet though it is near Euston Station.
